Howell got help organizing Sunday's triathlon from her supervisor, Beth Riske, and from Corey Snyder from U-M Med Sport. They had 60 volunteers from their staff sign up for the event.
Howell, Riske, and Snyder contacted Domino Farm's, which opened up its facilities for the event.
There were 27 athletes, ranging in age from 4 to 15, from all over southeast Michigan.
Kevin Jones, 54, of Jackson, said his son Zachariah Ashley, who has a mild form of cerebral palsy, has been looking forward to the event ever since he got a flyer.
"(Zachariah) has been putting his swim trunks on - 'Where are my swim trunks dad, so I can be ready?'" Jones said. "We were so excited about the event we forgot his crutches.".
